What is a Virtual Windows Desktop?

Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) is an Azure service that combines licences, services and resources to provide Windows users with a fully visualised multi-user Windows 10 experience.

Windows Virtual Desktop (alternatively referred to as Azure Virtual Desktop) is a Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) that enables secure remote working on any device, anywhere. This virtual service ensures familiarity and compatibility of Windows 10 whilst offering the optimal virtual experience for Windows 10 and MS Office 365 users. Additionally, the WVD offers administration and monitoring capabilities, allowing system administrators to rapidly install and manage desktops, applications and Windows servers on the Azure Cloud.

Windows Virtual Desktop licensing

Windows needs software licences or cloud subscriptions in order to utilise the service lawfully. Apart from access to the Windows Virtual Desktop, any usage of Office apps on the virtual desktop requires an Office Standard or Office Professional Plus licence or a certified Office 365 subscription.

If you already own an eligible Windows, Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Client Access License (CAL), there is no additional cost.

Benefits of using Windows Virtual Desktop

Decrease in overall costs

There are no additional license costs as Windows Virtual Desktop can be used with your existing eligible Microsoft or Windows license or subscription. Additionally, Windows 10's multi-session functionality allows numerous concurrent users to access the hosted desktop server through Virtual Machines (VMs), lowering the expense of maintaining several servers for different users. Furthermore, as Windows Virtual Desktop can run on almost any device with an internet connection, there is no need to purchase more hardware as reasonably modern existing devices are alright to use.

Enables secure remote work on any device

Windows Virtual Desktop enables complete virtualisation of Windows 10 and Windows Server desktops and applications on any personal device connected to the internet.

Application and user data security

Utilise security technology such as the Azure Firewall, Azure Sentinel and Azure Security Centre to minimise vulnerabilities and help keep your virtual desktops safe and secure.

Increase in flexibility

Windows Virtual Desktop may be accessed using a Remote Desktop client application that has been installed. This programme is compatible with Windows, Mac OS, iOS and Android, allowing further flexibility in the work environment. Furthermore, WVD can also be accessed through any modern device with an internet connection, creating further flexibility whilst working.

Increase in productivity

End users can be more productive with the desktop experience they expect thanks to seamless integration with Microsoft 365 Applications and Microsoft Teams for businesses. Additionally, the built-in Azure Site Recovery and Backup technology allows teams and businesses to continue working with minimal interruption during downtime.
