Citrix XenApp vs Microsoft Remote Desktop Services

Citrix XenApp and Microsoft Remote Desktop Services are two virtualisation desktop solutions which enable users to work remotely on any device with an internet connection.

Both desktop solutions provide many similar features, however, each of them have their different pros and cons. GoCloud uses both Citrix XenApp and Microsoft RDS for partners and clients.

What is Citrix XenApp?

Citrix XenApp (also referred to as Citrix Virtual Apps) is application virtualisation software which enables users to access applications on their hosted desktop remotely on any device.

Citrix XenApp integrates apps away from the underlying operating system and displays them to the end user. Citrix XenApp enables users to install applications on a server and access them without the requirement to install anything on the user device, enabling remote users to access applications from any device.

The Citrix XenApp is also a feature of the Citrix Workspace app.

What is Microsoft Remote Desktop Services?

Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (also referred to as Microsoft RDS) was formerly known as Terminal Services.

Microsoft RDS is a collection of thin client technologies that enable users to connect and access applications or virtual desktops which are hosted on a server or on the cloud, enabling users the possibility to work remotely on any device.

Benefits of Citrix XenApp

Citrix XenApp offers a number of benefits, including the ability for clients to install apps on the server, which can then be securely accessed from any device with an internet connection, without the need for anything to be installed on the user devices. This provides users with more flexible and efficient access to their desktops.

Citrix XenApp enables easy user desktop management and the operation of running Microsoft Office applications and software, while also providing a positive end-user experience while using desktop features.

Drawbacks of Citrix XenApp

Citrix XenApp may be difficult or complicated to use at times and may seem to be more costly to use since the software is regarded as an add-on to Microsoft RDS.

Benefits of Microsoft Remote Desktop Services

Microsoft RDS offers a number of benefits, one of which is that it enables secure remote access to your desktop from any device with an internet connection, providing you with more flexible access to your desktop.

Additionally, it integrates seamlessly with existing apps, enhancing user experiences and business productivity. Furthermore, this desktop solution is simple to use and maintain and can be tailored to fit specific business needs.

Drawbacks of Microsoft Remote Desktop Services

Microsoft RDS can also have its drawbacks, including the fact that it may be difficult or complicated to use at times and may be costly in multi-user situations.
